The Godfather Of SD Design Community
Reflecting on Graphic design class meetup with Mr. Miriello. I arrived to he's studio in Barrio Logan, newly gentrified area, artistic, industrial with cultural roots. Miriello greeted us one by one with handwritten blue name tags. At first glance I thought he was a starving artist.Shame on me for not researching the man for goodness sakes. As he spoke he was all over the place, jumping from subject to subject. Nevertheless, still intrigued on what he had to say. He had an aura of brilliances. As I looked around the small intimate studio I noticed how some of my classmates were memorized & in awe. He was a humble man and down played his accomplishments as my classmates asked him questions about his latest projects. His studio was a comfortable work environment with refurbished Italian bikes hanging from the wall. He went on to talk about his creative process. He mentioned that he collects items that he likes and feels connected too. Also,he writes all his ideas down especially while traveling abroad. You never know what can spark an inspiration, I guess. He also discussed his hardships and downfall during the recession, which during that time he lost his business, his mother, wife divorced him and almost lost his building. Well you know the old saying, "when it rains it pours." Ron is known & respected by many in the SD design community as, " The Godfather of the design community." As many designers got their first freelance thru Ron. I appreciated how transparent he was and relatable. As well as, an open door policy which I intend on taking advantage of in the future. When I got home I researched him and yet and behold Ron was the designer for one of my favorite Italian cafes in north park, Caffé Calabria." As well as, many other big projects such as metro transit, Taylormade, and 100's world project. Overall, meet & greet was successful and gained a new contact. Thanks MaeLin!
